Small Group Lesson: God Has Many Names

the_names_of_god_by_eagleknight-d2z4bigWhen God was commissioning Moses to go and deliver the Israelites from Egyptian slavery Moses asked God, (Exodus 3:13) “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God responds by saying, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” Jehovah God is the Great I AM!  In our culture we have a tendency to see God by but one name which is no name at all we see and call him God.  But those who interacted with him called him by many names to attempt to capture the full essence of who Jehovah really is.
This week during our small group time we are going to look at one text and see the beautiful description of God in the 23rd Psalms and see the names of God come to life.

Verse 1: The LORD is my shepherd—Jehovah-Rohi — Literally means The Lord who Shepherds me.

 — When you think of Jehovah God do you see him as the shepherd of your life?  Is He the one who guides you? Is He the one that determines where you will live? where and when you will rest? Do you like Moses proclaim to God if you don’t go before me then I don’t want to Go?  A Shepherd dictates all the sheeps movement, does God direct yours?  IF not, why not?  Is it a trust issue? or a control issue?

I shall not want—Jehovah-Jireh — Literally means The Lord who provides.

— Do you view God as the source of all your provisions?  Are you confident that no matter what befalls you that God can and will make the necessary provisions for you?  Do you worry or do you trust?

Verse 2: He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters—Jehovah-Shalom — literally means the Lord who gives peace
— Does God bring peace to your life?  Do you allow him to be the source of your comfort and rest?  If not, why not?
Verse 3: He restoreth my soul—Jehovah-Rapha — literally means the Lord who heals
— Is God the God of healing in your life? relationships? body, soul, and mind?  If not why not?
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake —Jehovah-Tsidkenu
— He is our righteousness, we do not have a righteousness that is of ourselves our righteousness comes from God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  How might this reality transform your life?

Verse 5: Thou anointest my head with oil—Jehovah-Mekaddishkem
