Dig Deeper – Who is God (part 1)

Dig Deeper

In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

The first verse in the Bible is packed with rich insight, in one short sentence so much is said and so many implications made.  In the beginning, referring to our beginning, GOD….  Who is this God?  Where did he come from and what can I know about him?  Is he the transcendent Being that all people worship?  Does he just go by different names for different people?  Should I worship him or fear him or maybe both?

When I was a young man I had an image of God that, well let’s just say I was terrified of Him.  I thought of him as this inescapable, unavoidable, and terrifying God who was looking for opportunity to point out my flaws and condemn me to an eternity of Fire.  But was this an accurate image of God?

In today’s world there are a lot of opinions about who God is, some say he’s the creation of man’s own mind, while others suggest that he is whomever you see him as.  We hear terms like worship the God of your choosing and there can’t be only one way to God but is this true?  Can we know, or are we destined to a life of uncertainty?  I don’t know about you but I want to know who the God is who is powerful enough to speak a world into existence.  I want to know the God that gives life.  I want to know the God who sustains life!  And shouldn’t a God who has the power to speak the world into existence have the right to define himself?  Shouldn’t we be seeking him as he presents himself?

Will the REAL GOD please stand up!

How can we possibly know that he God of the Bible is in fact the one true God?  Before we answer this question let me make sure we understand one thing on the onset.

Either the God of the Bible is the only true God or he’s no God at all.  He makes claims of exclusivity.

  • 6:4 The Lord thy God is one God.
  • Deuteronomy 32:39  “See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.
  • Isaiah 43:10-11  “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.  (11)  I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.
  • There are 25-30 more similar claims in the Bible.  So the God of the bible claims exclusivity. Either he is the one true God or he is no God at all.

The God of Prophesy

One of the most compelling cases for God is his ability to accurately predict future events.  We know that much of what was written in the Old Testament was written before the time of Christ. Yet Jesus accurately fulfills over 300 prophesies, many of which he had no power to fulfill. (i.e. Betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, born in Bethlehem, crucified just to name a few)  Other “religions” claim many things but none even come close to the accuracy of the Bible.

The God of Power

I believe there are many stories about how God manifested his power before his people throughout time but the most compelling of all is the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The fact that Jesus, in relatively modern times, rose from the dead and walked the earth after being publicly crucified is telling indeed.  Any God who has that kind of power sets himself apart from all the rest.  For more on the evidence of the resurrection click here.

Finding out who the real God is may very well be the most important quest of your life.  If the God of the Bible is the one true God, and I believe him to be, then he has clearly defined himself and given us everything we need to understand what he desires of us.  Continue to read over and pray over Genesis 1 and 2 and ask the Real God to give you answers and peace.  God Bless see you tonight!

A Daily Devotional for our Youth.
Over the course of the next year we will be digging deeper into the words of the Bible to try and understand what we’re reading.  This week we start in Genesis 1:1 In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  A profound statement with profound implications.  Many questions may arise out of the reading of this one verse like when was the beginning? Who is God? what is meant by created? what is meant by Heavens.  Take a moment and ponder these questions.
When Was the Beginning?
If you spend any time studying the origin of earth you’ve probably been told the earth is 4.543 Billion years old, yet a cursory study of the bible would cause you to conclude that the earth is closer to 6,000 years old.  Why the huge discrepancy? If science has concluded the earth is older than what the bible appears to suggest then doesn’t that cause us to question the validity of the bible?  Well there are a couple of things that need to be considered before we take such a leap.
1. Science has been wrong before.
  • Let me preface what I’m about to say by saying that this is not an indictment on science.  Science has been and will continue to be a source of unbelievable discovery and should not be dismissed as always wrong.  But over the course of time science has made some pretty bold claims that were later proven to be wrong.
  • Scientists used to believe that life spontaneously generated.  Aristotle was a huge proponent of this idea based on his observations of the ways maggots would seemingly generate out of dead animal carcass, or barnacles would form on the hull of a boat.  This idea was believed even into the 1700s.  This was later disproved when Louis Pasteur showed that maggots would not appear on meat kept in sealed containers.  There are other examples but for the sake of brevity I’ll proceed.
 2. There are two creation theories
  • When considering creation there are two schools of thought concerning the beginning.  One is the belief that the earth is in fact somewhere in the neighborhood of 6000 years old.  This conclusion is reached by asserting that the earth was created in 6-24 hour days as recorded in Genesis 1, after concluding this it’s relatively easy to use the bible to date the earth to around 6000 years through the recorded genealogies.  The second view is one of an old earth creation ideology.  Basically this school of thought postulates that the earth was created over a longer period of time and not 6-24 hour days as seemingly stated in Genesis 1.  This viewpoint allows for the earth to be billions of years old as science suggests.
As we look and pray over this verse I encourage you to open your hearts to what God wants you to hear and understand.  Let’s be very careful not to major in the minors of this text and focus on the implications of it instead.  In the Beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth has grand implications on how you live your life! Tomorrow we shall dive into the who is God question.  God Bless you!
